Information on Cookies

What are Cookies?

One "cookie" is a text file stored on the user’s computer when he/she visits a website with the aim of providing information every time the user goes back to the same website. It is a sort of reminder of the Internet page. Thanks to cookies, the web server exchanges information with the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.). These are stored on the user’s computer and they update every time he/she goes back to the site. This way the website can automatically conform to the user. While browsing the user may also receive on his/her device cookies of different sites (“third-party” cookies), which are set directly by the website administrators and used for the purposes and in the manner they shall determine.

Depending on their duration, they are session cookies (that is temporary cookies, they erase automatically from the device after each browsing session by closing the browser) and persistent cookies (which are stored on the device until they expire or the user deletes them).

According to the function and purposes of use, cookies can be grouped into two categories: technical and profiling cookies.

Technical Cookies

Some cookies allow computer identifications, monitoring of sessions and storing of specific information on users visiting a web page. These technical cookies are useful to navigate through a website and to use all the functions available. Technical cookies do not require a prior consent of the user. Analytics cookies belong to the category. They map out the use of a website by a specific user in order to improve its effectiveness. For example, analytics cookies show the most visited pages and allow verifying the website’s use patterns in order to understand eventual difficulties that can arise while browsing a page.

Profiling Cookies

Other cookies are useful to monitor and collect information to profile users while browsing, analysing their moves, as well as consultation and buying behaviours (what they purchase, read etc.), and are aimed to propose advertising and targeted services. These are called profiling cookies. Under art. 7 of European Regulation GDPR 2016/679 and national law in force, the use of said cookies implies prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent.

Third-party Cookies

A web page may also include cookies from other sites, which are hosted in the various elements present on the page, as for example advertising banners, images, videos, maps or specific links to pages owned by other domains and residing on a different server with respect to the requested page. In other words, these cookies are set directly by website administrators or servers that differ from the one hosting the interested page. These are the so-called third-party cookies, which normally have profiling functions. The use of these type of cookies requires prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent.
